Expert panel defines healthy sleep habits—how do yours measure up?

Healthy sleep is the foundation of good health. Without it, you can’t properly handle stress, fight off illness, or eliminate toxins. Lack of sleep is behind a dizzying array of health woes, ranging from weight gain and inflammation to gastrointestinal diseases and even cancer.
In other words, consistent, restful sleep is non-negotiable.
You might think that it’s obvious whether you’re getting enough of the right kind of sleep, but the fact is, a lot of people think their sleep is great when it really leaves a lot to be desired.
Which is why a panel of experts recently published a list of healthy sleep habits. How many of these are you able to check off?
• It doesn’t take more than 15 or 20 minutes to fall asleep.
• You get 7 to 9 hours of shuteye per 24-hour period.
• Your sleep is continuous, without long stretches of lying there wishing you were asleep.
• You wake up refreshed.
• You spend your days alert and fully productive.
• Those close to you don’t notice sleep-disrupting behaviors from you, such as snoring, pauses in breathing, or restlessness.
If every single one of these sleep essentials applies to you, then give yourself a gold star. But if not, it’s time to do something about it.
Here’s one thing not to do though, under any circumstances: Do not resort to a pharmaceutical sleep aid — either prescription or over-the-counter.
Not only do they mask the symptoms without addressing the root of the problem, they also come with a laundry list of truly terrifying risks. In fact, one study published by the prestigious British Medical Journal found that sleeping pills are associated with a whopping 320,000 premature deaths in the United States each year!
Throw in the fact that they cause dizziness, drowsiness (yes, the same problem you’re trying to solve), impaired coordination, memory glitches, and behavior and mood changes, and it’s pretty clear that these drugs are simply not worth the risks.
The best — and safest — way to get more sleep is by getting to the root of your sleep problems.
I’ve developed a program called the Perfect Sleep Protocol which will show you exactly how to do that, with step-by-step instructions.
